A Visit To Citywest Campus – Dublin

I find these structures remarkable to see and beautiful to behold.

Here is the photo caption on Flickr:

The Dr Tony Ryan Academy comprises a single story administration building and two distinctive 18 metre high egg shaped titanium clad pods incorporating 2 lecture theatres, reading and meeting areas, seminar rooms, office space and canteen.

The complexity of the pod structures was dictated by the steel shell which formed the basis for construction in the first phase. The second phase involved intricate first fix timber members bolted to the structural steel in both horizontal and vertical planes to which the titanium was then secured.

I love the Ryan Institute, it is a beautiful building. Unfortunately it is certainly not green. The building has a G energy rating. It has a glass facade that doesn’t work and the beautiful titanium “seed pods” have a huge infiltration problem which makes them uninhabitable in Winter. The roof leaks and the floor inside has cracked in numerous points due to underfloor heating set too high to offset the enormous heatloss.
