Guest Post: Finding Heat Loss of Energy in Buildings

Measuring heat lost may sometimes require specialized equipment.

Over the last decade, more and more homeowners have been more conscious of the energy that is lost within their property. This is mainly due to the expenses of energy, as well as a bigger goal of trying to cut their carbon footprint.

There are many places around the house that cause wasted energy that you may not realise or even think about. Luckily it isn’t too expensive in a lot of cases to solve the problem. Realistically, some home improvements such as insulation might be a little more expensive to get. But it’s definitely worth it when you take into consideration how much you will save over a long period of time whilst living there. These improvements should be seen as a long-term strategy which is first and foremost beneficial environmentally, as well as being financially sound in the long run, too.

You may be aware that your home is not energy sound. The first thing to do is to find the source of the energy loss. The main areas in which properties lose energy are heating, ventilation, air conditioning and lighting. If you concentrate on one or more of these areas, you could potentially save a considerable amount and in turn have a good impact environmentally too. One simple saving is to only use hot water only when it is truly needed.

Some of the energy losses are visible from outside of the house. One common occurrence with office buildings is that heating systems carry on overnight when no one is there. This is also true within the home. You can set a timer for the heating to go off not long after you have gone to bed so it isn’t on throughout the night. Another factor which affects both homes and businesses is leaving lights on overnight when they are not needed. Making minor changes like these may not seem like a lot, but over time it makes a significant difference.

After implementing changes, look to maximize your savings with other significant changes. One great option is to find a test equipment hire company to rent a thermal imaging camera. This uses a specialized piece of equipment to find specific areas which are leaking heat; they do this by displaying a temperature reading rather than a normal picture through the colors which are shown on the screen. Reds, oranges and yellows appear where the heat is emitting. This gives you a precise guideline as to where to make improvements on a building. Some examples of leaks, such as losing heat through a poorly made door, are easy to see, whereas others are near enough impossible to find without using a thermal camera. These particular leaks are found inside as well outside the building. Some windows with gaps may be fairly easy to solve, but building subsidence can be a major source of heat loss which could be a fair job to put right. Other significant wastes of energy are misdirected airflows or faulty ducts inside the building. Thermal imaging cameras are perfect for detecting any of these types of energy loss. Fixing them quickly is usually relatively easy, with a huge impact on your energy usage.

Concentra Urges Employers to Protect against Swine Flu Outbreak.

Vaccine Weekly May 13, 2009 As the Swine Flu epidemic continues to grow and the number of confirmed cases climbs in the U.S., Concentra Urgent Care is advising employers to seek immediate medical attention for any employee who displays flu-like symptoms. Should an employee display a high fever, nausea, fatigue, and cough, medical providers at Concentra Urgent Care can evaluate, treat, and offer prescription medication to help return patients back to good health (see also Concentra Urgent Care).

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the new Swine Flu strain is spreading from human to human, in the same manner as seasonal flu, through coughing, sneezing, and surfaces contaminated by infected people. To protect employees and patients, Concentra Urgent Care recommends people routinely wash their hands, avoid sharing food or drinks, and limit contact with infected people. To help communicate the importance of safe health practices at the workplace and reduce the spread of the virus, a free wellness poster is available for download at www.Concentra.com.

“This is a serious health concern, that can have serious consequences on employers whose workforce could become incapacitated by a flu outbreak,” said Concentra Senior Vice President of Medical Operations Bill Lewis, M.D. “Concentra understands the impact a flu outbreak can have on employers in this economy, and has the necessary tests and medical expertise to provide a viable first line of defense in combating the spread of infection among employees and provide patients with quality medical treatment.” Employers face a unique challenge in preventing the spread of the Swine Flu, as most workers share close working space with other employees – leading to faster and easier spread of the virus. Similarly, employers who have even a small portion of its workforce become ill may see higher health care costs and lost employee productivity. As more information about the Swine Flu is collected and the spread of infection is monitored by the World Health Organization, Concentra advises employers to prepare but not panic in order to limit the impact of the outbreak. go to website concentra urgent care see here concentra urgent care

“This is a good opportunity to review your company’s health and safety policies, communicate with employees about preventive health measures, and increase routine cleanings of communal areas in the workplace,” said Concentra National Wellness Director Amy Khan, M.D., M.P.H. “For health care workers, international travelers, and family members and others who come in close contact with Swine Flu patients the use of protective face masks may be appropriate, but are not necessary for the general public at this time.” The Swine Flu, classified as a variation of the H1N1 strain, is a new strain of Influenza that contains genes from North American swine and avian influenza, human influenza, and swine influenza normally found in Asia and Europe. The CDC has confirmed numerous cases of patients infected with the Swine Flu in the U.S. and has issued a public health emergency, releasing 12 million doses of antiviral medications to federal, state, and local health organizations. Public health officials have confirmed cases in California, Kansas, Texas, Ohio, Indiana, and New York. Other countries have also reported cases of Swine Flu, including New Zealand, Spain, Canada, and most notably Mexico – which has suffered the only fatalities since the outbreak. There have been no flu-related deaths in the U.S. to date and cases have been mild in comparison to other countries.

Symptoms of the flu-like illness include a high fever, body aches, coughing, sore throat, respiratory congestion and, in some cases, vomiting and diarrhea. The new virus is being spread through human-to-human transmission, and is not contracted through eating pork or pork products. No vaccine specifically protects against Swine Flu, and it is unclear how much protection current human flu vaccines might offer. More information on the Swine Flu, including a health safety checklist for families, can be found at www.Concentra.com .
