She advances to the women’s final March 11 at Suburbanite Bowl in Westmont. Lucy Roberts and Desiree Quinlan also advanced from Fox Valley. The top prize in the finals is a 2001 Ford Focus from the Chicagoland Ford Dealers.

Sectional action concludes Saturday in the charity bowling event that has been co-sponsored for 40 years by the Chicago Sun-Times and the Chicagoland Bowling Proprietors Association.

“(Darrell) said, `If you want to be with me, you have to learn how to bowl,’ ” Thelen said. “He used to take me out on Saturdays and bowl 15 games until my fingers blistered. He used to tell me that is why you get new skin. But it paid off and made me what I am.” She became a good bowler. The human resource analyst for the Village of Schaumburg rolled games of 199, 178 and 237. She also carried 60 pins of handicap.

Home-court advantage helped, too.

Thelen bowls in NFL Trio, a Sunday morning men’s league with a smattering of women, at Hoffman. She carries a 171 average there. go to web site 2001 ford focus

“I bowled four games this morning and the score didn’t reach what I bowled (in three BTC games) this afternoon,” Thelen said. “It is my house, and I felt comfortable here.” Roberts found her comfort zone in the final two frames. She had three opens in the third game, but struck in the ninth frame and the first two balls of the 10th for a 204. With games of 195 and 183 and a handicap of 57, the Maywood homemaker totaled 639.

“I almost messed up,” said Roberts, who advanced from Fox Bowl in Wheaton. “But the strikes did it for me at the end.” Quinlan, who advanced from Espo’s Country Lanes, did it with the second game. She opened with a 152, then had a 207 and finished with a 160. With 112 pins of handicap, she totaled 631. The computer consultant from Streamwood figures to bowl again in four weeks.
