Reporting on Sustainably Built Environments from Bricks to Cities
The College of Fellows is one of the top honors that architects can get in their field. It is only for members who have made contributions of national significance to the profession. Of the more than 80,000 AIA architects in the US, there are fewer than 2,700 members who have been awarded with this honor.
A US patented design by land developer, Miguel A. Serrano, named after the weather phenomenons that it is built to endure and its designed structure: Storm, Tornado and Tsunami Interconnected Modules Shelters (STATIM) could be one of many life-saving mechanisms that become part of the built world. The STATIM Shelter System is a series of pre-cast concrete modules that are assembled with gasket joints and post-tension cables. This combination and design ensures a water-tight shelter with buoyancy and self-righting capabilities.
In Paradise Valley, Montana, experienced builder, Pouwel Gelderloos and family designed, built and are marketing the first “hybrid” house. It is a hybrid because it can be completely self-sustaining (off the grid) but is also connected to the grid incase the need should arise for additional energy sources.
