Hi, I'm a former nuclear engineer and I have a few things to say about the posts. First of all I would like to mention that the above statement which in short, said 'this assumption says this and its not valid. But our ASSUMPTION is valid' sorry but they are both assumptions and we all know what happens when you assume. Second i would like to mention that gamma radiation was compared to smoking cigarettes. Cigarettes contain nicotine which is an alpha particle emitter and is damaging to the lungs because there is no dead layer of skin inside the body to protect against such radiation. The radiation that is emitted by radon is primarily gamma radiation and is nothing compared to alpha radiation in contact with new skin. It was also stated that up to 770 pico curies/hr were emitted from some granites which made them dangerous. A banana emits approximately 450 pico curies/hr. Enjoy your stone countertops.

Ilene,

the scientists are saying that about 5% of all granites are going to put off serious levels of radon. Your showroom may not have had any of the high producing stones or there may have been enough ventilation to keep the levels down.

Still you didn't test the actual granite itself in a small space like a kitchen. Depending upon your own "test" is leaving you wide open if you aren't testing every slab you sell for both radiation and radon emanation.

And as you say, there are a few exceptions and as a seller, you had better know that the material you sell is not one of those exceptions.

In other words, if I use a green(homemade) cleaning product, i.e. a mixture of baking soda, vinegar and lemon oil, to clean my windowless bathroom, I'm doing harm to myself and my family?
