Great tip on checking granite slabs, recycling building materials is a great way to go green and add character to your home as well. Buying antiques is fabulous too!

Alas, granite suppliers are not necessarily reliable sources for information on the safety of granite. A granite supplier in the San Francisco Bay area tells customes their granite is "no more radioactive than soil or water". We measured Jupurana Bordeaux emitting over half a milliR/hr of gamma radiation in that very showroom. If you choose granite, the best option is a third party tester. Look for an industrial hygienist or a health physicist.

Do not forget your dual-flush toilets. As well, CFLs should have a high power factor rating otherwise you are only saving yourself money and not consuming less electricity overall.

Some great first steps for anyone considering becoming a "buddy" of the green movement.

There are a lot of great products out today that are significantly better for the environment than their original counter parts. Establishing a green home plan for your house can be a great step in helping to eliminate waste, decrease energy expenses (like in tip #1 & #3) and better your environment.

With regards to faucet aerators keep in mind there are various levels of water saving aerators. Most low flow aerators start at 2.5 gallons per minute and go as low as .5 gallons per minute. Here is a link to examples of what to look for at the hardware store. http://www.faucetaerators.com/faucet-aerators-c-21.html
