If someone is truly interested in a recessed light, and can spend a little more, there may be another option. I've seen it on a few shows on the Planet Green. It's the Solatube light that provides sunlight in the day and allows a recessed light to be inserted into the same area for lighting at night. It's two great items rolled into one.

And, yes, I always laugh at the hybrid SUV commercials. "Go from 16 miles per gallon to... 17!"

It's not the little sticker that says "Hybrid" that makes it a better vehicle, it's what's inside the vehicle that matters. Likewise with recessed lights.

Making a recessed can light look like a pendant light doesn't do anything to improve its energy efficiency or its performance. If you have a carpet-bombing house with non-IC fixtures in an insulated ceiling, making them look like pendants will do nothing to improve the insulation or the energy performance of the house. The company that was promoting them to me as a green improvement doing a disservice to anyone who buys their junk thinking it will somehow help save energy.

I'm okay with hybrid SUVs (though I think there are too many SUVs used by people who don't really need them, but that's a whole separate discussion for some other time).
