Phillip, I know your intentions are probably to avoid going political in your Green Building articles. However, I just can't resist the opportunity to tweak some of your fellow journalists. My apologies to you in advance of the following comments.

You made no mention that Al Gore, John Edwards, and a host of other green politicians live in "gigantic McMansions" similar to those you referenced. Since these are the guys who want to regulate all of our lives, why do they continually get a pass (esp. from green journalists) on adhering to their own standards? They want you to penalize you for building your home to a comfortable size while they live in the lap of luxury. They want you to ride the bus or the light rail while they drive SUV's and charter private flights. They do all the things that you guys rail against, but yet you support them at every turn. You say, "It is okay for the cause celebs to live one way but preach our way, because we need them to spread the word." Honestly, I wonder if they are preaching on our behalf, or simply setting us up to fall deeper into servitude.

But let's back to the green standards, I live in a 4 bedroom house with a total of 1712 square feet of living space. I think that it would be considered small even by the LEED standards you listed above, but I do not know (nor do I care) if it could gain the LEED seal of approval. I paid for it and it meets my needs, which is really all that matters. Right? As far as automobiles, the news has even admitted that producing batteries for them green hybrids is about as environmentally conscious as sailing the Exxon Valdez. As such, if you want a truck buy a freaking truck and avoid trying to make yourself feel good buy spending extra on a hybrid.

I offer a second apology to Phillip and anyone else that may be taking exception to my tone.
