<description>Philip: Here, here! Roundabouts have started springing up in my city of Santa Barbara, CA, and although there was a lot of resistance and predictions of doom and gloom, they&#039;ve been a fabulous feature for unclogging some pretty nasty intersections. The resistance seemed to be a prediction of mass pile-ups because our simple minds could figure out how to negotiate these elegant solutions, but even the ones at freeway offramps - which we&#039;d assume carry more than well-practiced locals - are being properly used and traffic accidents are no greater than a typical intersection.

Add to that your observation about reducing the by-products of idling vehicles and the green value just increases the value.

Once caveat is that pedestrian movement has to be well considered, as cars are in virtual continuous motion, and drivers tend to focus more on looking out for merging cars.

We&#039;ve been so successful that now Caltrans (the state agency for freeways and public transporation) is beginning construction of a major roundabout at another hideous intersection just south of here.

This is one case where circular logic is quite proper.

		<description>Philip,

It is really exciting to see people interested in these issues in the Southeastern Michigan vicinity!

My name is Grace Augustine and I am the co-founder of a professional chapter of the organization Net Impact here in Southeastern Michigan (www.netimpact.org). Our organization is a network of business professionals committed to making the global economy more sustainable and equitable. We believe in the potential of Southeastern Michigan to be an integral player in developing these progressive solutions and we are excited to have companies like you implementing that vision.

We are hosting an event on Green Building on October 24th at 6:45pm. We will tour the Lawrence Technological University&#039;s LEED-certified Taubman Center with Jim Newman, local U.S. Green Building LEED consultant.

I thought that you may be interested in attending the tour and discussion to connect with local professionals interested in energy efficiency, renewable energy, and solutions for sustainable development in Michigan.

Please feel free to check out our chapter page at http://www.netimpact.org/displaycommon.cfm?an=1&amp;subarticlenbr=1481 or contact me with any further questions.

Keep up the great blogging!
